Launch

We two, Ed and Amy, began our untethered-ness on April 5, 2019, the day the movers came.

The idea had been brewing for a long time, and finally in January 2019 we put our house on the market as an experiment. Ed was retiring the end of February, I was already retired, so it seemed like an opportune time. We didn’t think it would sell, and we would be firm about price.

Surprise! It sold in two and a half weeks for the asking price.

The buyers wanted us out by Feb. 22, but we couldn’t see it, as Ed wouldn’t be done with his 45-year psychology practice, and he had to get the office cleaned out, and I was a having a second hip replacement (the left this time) March 6. Fortunately, we were able to rent the house until April 7.

In the time remaining, we did what people do when they are preparing to move. We learned that becoming untethered from one’s of home of 26 years and putting everything in storage for a year, with a plan to grab stuff for various different trips is no easy task, and I’m not sure that we accomplished it.

Clearly, there are levels of untethered-ness. Dis-attaching from our home was big for us, but what about all those things in storage? We could have parted with most or all of them. Three days after the move it seemed we should have. You would think so too, if you saw our storage unit.

And then there’s the emotional stress. I cried for the better part of one day when we moved our cat to a friend’s house–and this even when he’s in a good place.

At the end of moving day, my operative leg was so sore I could only imagine that I’d broken my hip, there would be another surgery, we’d have to cancel all our plans, and all without a home.

I’m happy to report the pain was totally overuse and stress related.

So now, Onward. Departure date is 4/16/2019 after my six-week post-op medical appointment. May my X-ray show excellent health and healing. Then off to La Paz, Mexico that evening.

This is a journey to discover what’s next–if there is a winter destination for us, if there is another place to call home, if we can stay on the road, if I can improve my Spanish, if we can be better global citizens and connect with those in the places that we travel, and can we continue to  cultivate our established friendships that are miles away?
